I will not smack Ayobami...

....this week!!!!

lol

I was recently reviewing my disciplinary measures and felt that perhaps i was using the rod(my hands) too much on the individual.

So i decided to try an "i will not smack Ayobami" week. It's now Day four and i've been mostly successful even this morning when he tried to pluck out his brother's eye with an umbrella i only asked him to face the wall!!!!

I've hit his hand/butt only twice all week!!!!

I must admit he seems better behaved and hasnt been beating people like he normally would have, it makes me wonder or rather question our Nigerian upbringing(i assume the average nigerian has experience smacking/flogging/beating by parents and adults generally) is it a good idea?

perhaps because he gets smacked ever so often is the reason he seems to constantly be hitting people both his peers and adults alike!!! I understand that toddlers generally have "hitting/fighting" tendencies but could i have unknowingly endorsed it to my little boy?

How else can they be disciplined though? the naughty corner and face the wall punishments are working well for now sha

I dont intend to completely stop smacking the young man though but maybe now it'll be few and far between....

Please don't smack him o!

In my own case, I talk. When that fails, I ask them to face the wall. If I have to discipline for the same offence, I'll ask the offender to face the wall and raise his/her hands. At times, I ground the offender completely from all fun activities and even TV! I tell you, it works for me!

As they grow older, I'll introduce firmer punishments.

I think you should continue this method and see if it works better than the cane. You can record your findings, and perhaps, publish a book on it.

Lol. where have you been? Congrats on the new baby.

Reduce the beating, esp at this age. Time outs always work with toddlers. all the best, parenting is not easy sha..

I think that minimizing the smacks is a good thing...the corner and other methods where u can explain to children the reason for their punishment tend to work better.

Just realised caning does very little for my little girl. I found out that she absolutely hates standing in the 'naughty' corner. She becomes so remorse , its painful to see. I guess 'researching' what works best would help...
I heard once on Christian TV that even if you want to smack, don't use your bare hands. Use an object so the kid does not associate your hands and 'your very self' with pain...
All the best!

Me, I 'shout' Cus it's like they are out of hearing then when that fails, I do that which they hate.
I say:
'Go and sleep'
Then when it's very bad..
I spank them..

Punishments work instead of smacking! Congrats on Abayomi's aburo o! Funny my Mother NEVER smacked once not even at my naughtiest moments. Her tongue lashing was enough!

I endorse smacking, but it is just like putting a child in front of TV as far as I'm concerned...
It is a short term disciplinary action and may only inflict pain and not correction.
Making him understand why he is being punished is more appropriate but it is a long thing especially if you are a working mother with little or extra time to spare...hence the reason I compare it with putting a child in front of TV...quick and easy way to distract kids...you get me?:)

lol...I wish my parents told me to face the wall more often...I guess it works for kids as they are naturally restless. However I still support the rod!

Happy new year! So many cobwebs here
